Building local awareness and support is a key aim of the Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association as it works to convert the popular Bexhill Quarry from vacant, overgrown land to community ownership.
Success in the June round of Greater Bank’s #GreaterNorthernRivers Community Funding Program will help to achieve that goal.
Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association has received $2,000 after topping the vote count in the June round, with $500 going to both Ballina United Hospital Auxiliary and Casino Pony Club as our monthly runners up.
Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association Treasurer, Jodie Mitchell, said the quarry is a very special place.
“We are a group of volunteers working to develop the Bexhill Quarry site into a parkland for the enjoyment of local, regional, national, and international visitors,” Jodie said.
“The Bexhill Quarry is ranked up there with hidden Hinterland beauty spots, it is a spring-fed waterhole of the old Bexhill Quarry site.
“We recognise the popularity and potential of the four-acre site and have drafted a visionary master plan which would see the former Bexhill Brickworks site turned into a public recreation reserve.
“A complete makeover is envisioned making it a public reserve and tying it in with the Northern Rivers Rail Trail corridor.
“We are keen to spread the word about the benefits of this proposal, so the money from the Greater will be put towards events and other activities to promote our plan to the broader community and to encourage them to join the Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association.”

Greater Northern Rivers Regional Sales Manager, Scott McCluskey, said tourism is a major employer in the region.
“The Northern Rivers is already well-known as boasting great natural beauty and the Bexhill Quarry proposal would add another must-see destination to our tourism offering,” Scott said.
“We are delighted to be able to support this exciting plan and wish the Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association all the best in their endeavours.”
The monthly nominees for the July round of the program are Ballina Bombers Junior AFL, Tullera Community Hall and Casino Cricket Club, with another $3,000 up for grabs.
Voting in the July round is now open online and closes at 5.00pm Wednesday 26 July, 2023 at greater.com.au/greaternorthernrivers, which is also where community groups can register to be part of the program.
