Further track improvements, potentially including features and signage, will be the focus of money won by Helensburgh Offroad Cycle Club in the #GreaterIllawarra Community Funding Program.
Helensburgh Offroad Cycle Club has received $2,000 after securing the most votes in the September funding round, with monthly runners-up, Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby and Wings Over Illawarra, each receiving $500.
Helensburgh Offroad Cycle Club Committee Member, Huw Jarman, said the club was incredible proud of its achievements across what has been a short timeframe.
“In just three years, our members planned and built a two-kilometre loop mountain bike track with skills features, jumps and berms, turning a disused grassed area at Rex Jackson Ovals into a thriving and popular destination for people and families of all ages,” Huw said.
“Members are passionate and active, running regular fitness challenges for the local community, organising skills courses for children through to adults, and running a very popular program of school holiday youth clinics.

“All this has been done on a purely voluntary non-profit basis, with contributions from the local community and some government grants, so this injection of funds from Greater Bank is very welcome indeed and will enable us to continue to invest in upgrading our track and surrounds.”
Greater Bank’s Illawarra Regional Sales Manager, Greg Creagan, said the club has had a big impact since securing a lease for the facility.
“The popularity of mountain biking is growing all the time and really took off during COVID, which showed the need for facilities like the one the HORCC has built,” Greg said.
“It’s a real asset for the community, so we are proud to be able to support its continuing development.”
There’s another $3,000 to be shared among our October nominees: The Rail Cricket Club, 1st Bulli Scout Group and Shellharbour Junior Football Club.
The public online vote is now open at www.greater.com.au/greaterillawarra until 5.00pm Wednesday 26 October, 2022.
